Support for family & caregivers

You do not have to figure out every change alone. Family members and caregivers can be part of understanding the plan and helping make therapy useful in everyday life.

Start with the person's priorities

Ask what the person wants to do more easily and share what you notice at home. A helpful goal might be getting ready with less help, joining a conversation, or moving between a chair and a bed.

Tell the therapist how much help is available and which parts of a routine are difficult. A plan should fit the person's abilities and the support they actually have.

Use visits to ask and practice

Let the office know you would like to attend. Depending on the plan, education may include:

  • Cues that help someone follow a task or conversation.
  • Ways to set up a daily activity or use an adaptive aid.
  • Individual guidance for transfers, movement, or positioning.
  • How to use the home plan and report difficulties.

Make support consistent

Ask your therapist to explain or demonstrate anything that is unclear. Movement and transfer techniques should be chosen for the person and practiced with appropriate guidance.

A short, agreed routine can be easier to follow than many new instructions. Share changes, fatigue, or concerns at follow-up visits so the plan can be adjusted.

Before the appointment

Bring questions, relevant medical instructions, and a brief description of usual routines. Call about access or assistance needs in advance. We provide outpatient clinic visits; ask the office about the best setting for the person's needs.

Common questions

Can I join the evaluation?

Tell the office and the person receiving care that you would like to take part. We can discuss how to include you in goals, education, and practical planning.

What if a home activity is too difficult?

Tell the therapist what happened rather than guessing how to change it. The task, support, or amount of practice may need adjustment.
